Springtime is in the air! Say goodbye to the bulky coats, thick scarves, and cold bitter wind, and hello to flip flops, shorts, and the warm sun. This beautiful weather means it is time to lace up those sneakers and take your dog for a jog through the park. But this beautiful weather also means springtime allergies are in the air, leaving you with itchy, scratchy eyes and a stuffy nose. So how are you supposed to exercise when you’re body isn’t in top shape?
The first thing is first—identify the enemy. Typically pollen is the enemy for those who suffer from seasonal allergies. Pollen count typically peaks in the mornings and during warm, dry, windy weather, so plan your workouts in the afternoons or evenings during cool, damp days to minimize your chances of dealing with the pollen. Covering your hair and shielding your eyes with a baseball cap will also help minimize your chances of being affected by the pollen, especially if you don’t wash your hair every day. And though taking a shower after you exercise is expected (and appreciated), it is especially imperative for allergy sufferers. Pollen tends to stick to your body, especially after sweaty work out which can cause your allergies to flare up. Lastly, if you have to take medicine to relieve yourself of your allergy symptoms then work with your pharmacist or doctor to find the best one for your needs. Some antihistamines can make you feel tired and lethargic so learn when and how much you should take to avoid feeling tired before you plan to exercise.
Don’t let the pollen in the air drag you down, leaving you lethargic or too miserable to get your daily exercise. You should be able to enjoy this beautiful weather without worrying about your allergies taking over, so take the time to make your health a priority this spring.
